QUOTES FROM HAND LETTERED HOPE
“I love that because so often we think that God is good and God is love. So the plans will be all fluffy and sweet and he’s a comforting God, he’s our counselor. So we think that they’re going to, like his plans are going to be the ones that just feel the best. But often his plans make us the most uncomfortable.”
Michelle Watson, The Pantry Podcast, S02E07, Hand Lettered Hope
“The kingdom of God, I would encourage everyone to share him much more than in the end. That’s what matters. Not for what we share but who we share. And if you’re not sharing Jesus, we are missing out.”
Shea Watson, The Pantry Podcast, S02E07, Hand Lettered Hope
“There needs to be people like you who reach different audiences. Because you know, at the end of the day, we could sit here and talk about all of these things that go on around us. But the only way that a heart changes is through the word of God and through Jesus Christ.”

Shea: What’s up B
Michelle: What’s up.
Shea: Hi. I’m kinda excited this week.
Michelle: I think the fact, we always say that we’re excited is a good sign.
Shea: We’re not lying. Yo, we really are excited. This is so much fun. It really is. Last week though, we talked about more than tracks. I love the idea that we’ve all been wonderfully made, were unique. You know, we were created in God’s image. We have an ability to go out and share the word of God differently. I mean, sometimes we get caught in like the one way, but there are so many different ways that we can demonstrate how great and how wonderful and how beautiful he is. And today we have a guest that does that beautifully.
Michelle: Yeah. This is going to get really interesting. Y’all cause for the next couple of weeks, we’re going to have some really awesome guests for you to hear from that, just embody this and maybe will inspire you to do something different. But today we have Georgy Roy and he’s an internationally known hand lettering artist and he uses his talent to share the word of God. His work has been featured in print and digital publications in his home country of India and abroad such as India pro church media, good newsfeed and Christian creative. But if you’re like me, you know him best by his edifying posts on Instagram, under his username, GY_Roy, thanks so much for joining us, Georgy Roy.
Georgy Roy: Thanks for having me. I think I’m more than excited right now. I’ve had coffee.
Shea: But I, I liked that introduction. I like, I really liked that, that introduction, go out to his Instagram because he has got a word that you will get something out of. I’ve been actually reading them for the last few days. And they’re just amazing. It’s amazing to see that there’s someone that loves Christ so much, that he puts his art into it, his, his soul into it. And you can just read and know that this guy’s in the word.
Michelle: Give us how you got to become this hand lettering artist on Instagram.
Georgy Roy: that is, I think I started lecturing three and a half years back, but I think the journey has been on for over 14 years. You know, being a teenager is not so easy. And that being said, I have been in faith since 98. My parents got ordained as the pastors for our church here in the city. And I’ve been a church kid in the time that I remember. But you know, there’s a big difference in being a church kid and actually being a follower of Christ. So I knew all the ins and outs of the churches, you know, worship Sunday service. I was grew up spending groups and everything, but things started to change. When I started failing in high school, I was a good student, but I failed twice and depression, anxiety, and all of those things start creeping in. I struggled with that for three years in that phase is where I developed a personal and a closer relationship with Christ, not wanting to do engineering.
Georgy Roy: I was looking for a creative outlet and thankfully the year that I graduated, there was a new multimedia process that opened up in our city. And I got in, I didn’t have to leave my city. I didn’t have to do anything else. I had a basic portfolio already with my graphic design. So they just let me in with an interview and my portfolio. And during those three years, I started solving more in the church, learn more on evangelism, worship and everything. And actually I graduated as a photograph, ran a VFX artist. I worked as a photograph for and a VFX office for one and a half year. And then on YouTube, I came across lecturing and all that money goes down the drain. And now I’m learning lecturing through free YouTube videos. And since then there’s no turning back photograph fees on a side note, like I do it from tunes, but I don’t do it as Workfront is not on business anymore. We affects, I do it for church promos and things, but nothing else. Now it’s just lecturing. And thankfully I praise God that I’ve been able to learn this and being able to use it for not just the business, but for the kingdom. And I’ve been able to serve in various ministries and churches throughout the city and some other States as well for the from shirts, badges bags and coffee mugs. Those are the best.
Michelle: Yeah. I’ve been looking at the stuff that’s on like red bubble and society six and all these different places. And I’m like, yeah, I need some of this stuff.
Georgy Roy: I’m actually trying to shift to a completely, a solo eCommerce site. I think I’ll be able to launch it by the first week of June. So maybe we can do a, a promo code for you guys.
Michelle: Super cool. Yeah. We’ll definitely talk about that afterwards.
Shea: So I was reading in Romans 10, we sit here and we’re like, man, what do I do? You know, I, we, some of us grow up in the church. Some of us don’t, some of us started with Christ from the beginning. And then some of us start with a little later on. And when I was thinking about this episode, so many different ways to reach people because there are so many different kinds of people, but, I like Romans 10:14, how it starts. It says how then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard and how shall they hear without a preacher and how shall they preach unless they are sent, as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things.
Shea: There needs to be people like you who reach different audiences. Because you know, at the end of the day, we could sit here and talk about all of these things that go on around us. But the only way that a heart changes is through the word of God and through Jesus Christ. And man, I like that about what you do. I like that you’re on Instagram where most people are doing like selfies and all these other things. And you’re writing, putting the word of God out there in a loving way. And I think that that is going to reach people.
Michelle: Yeah. What kind of, what kind of people have reached out to you saying, you know, your words have ministered to them.
Georgy Roy: I mean, surprising you, there have been a lot of teenagers, people with anxiety that people from other States in India who have reached out and I was able to introduce them to the Bible and now actually doing a Bible study together, introducing them to Christ in a simple way to God, just because they have been completely intrigued. Some of the recent posts where I put the declarations of those are what intrigued those two. And they came in, how do you have this confidence? Why, how can you be so bold about this? I was like that you’d have to read where this declaration is coming from. And they said, we don’t have the Bible. And how can we buy the Bible? You don’t need to buy the Bible right now. It’s on your phone. You can get it through the app. So different faiths, teenagers, youths, anxiety, depression worries about the future because nothing looks so stable right now. And believers, of course, I’ve been able to connect with a lot of like minded. One of the people like you guys as well, who share the same faith and being able to build each other up, share prayer points, have a call, have talked with them. It has been like an extended family for sure, man. That’s awesome.
Michelle: When I think of the artists and how they’re reaching people, it makes me think of when King Solomon gets all of the artisans together to build the temple. They’re skilled in all these different ways. God’s using them each for something he couldn’t use anybody else for. And so when I see people doing what you do on Instagram, I see all these people sharing images, spreading this gospel message, because the words are beautiful already when you hear them. But there’s something about the way lettering brings out a new layer of meaning and beauty to the word. How do you choose which ones you’re going to do? Is it based on what you’re reading in the moment or what you’ve heard recently, or how do you choose
Georgy Roy: Recently? I’ve been running this Bible challenge every day. I try to share as much as possible. The declarations have been a blessing for me to remind myself on Instagram. They were asking that, how do you know what you’re supposed to do throughout the day? I try to share as much as possible knowing someone else is also struggling or going through the same anxious moments, more casually and more freely than actually like, I like that. I like how you shifted from like the obedience into the spiritual, because you know, in our relationship with Christ, it’s like, it takes both sometimes, sometimes, you know, like it depends on the season. Like, you know, please ask you three, it’s always about season. And it’s like, wow. In one season, I, cause I know with what’s going on right now in the world, a lot of our seasons have changed.
Shea: And a lot of the way that we’re bringing the word of God out has changed a little bit, you know, from like a planning phase, you know, okay, what am I going to do over the next six months in the Bible study to almost like, you know what carried me into the week? I like how you’re, you’re declaring things. How, you know, the spirit is talking to you, you get up and then you put it on paper and I’m telling you some of the things that I see you doing are amazing. He gave everyone a talent. He gave everyone something special and we should dial into that. I’ll be humble in it. But at the same time, be thankful and be thankful that he has given us these abilities to share his word in different ways, unique ways. You know, it’s like nothing else in the whole world. And it’s so awesome that he gives us to do this. And I like your declarations. I like that. You wake up and you’re like, Lord, talk to me and start with devotion and devotion carries into thought. And then that thought transposes itself.
Georgy Roy: Yeah, it definitely goes to paper. My desk is a mess with papers. Wait, I mean, the others won’t be able to see it, but we taughts and you know, revisions over and over. But when you, you know, you were talking about seasons, I was talking to some of the universities, we run a church service and a local university as well. That is also an amazing testimony. I actually applied there for diploma in civil engineering. And then I dropped out. But five years down the line, I was there evangelizing. And we now have a just service running that every Sunday with international and national students as well. And me and my dad have been ordained as official pastors for that. So, you know, not everything that happens in our life is always pleasing to us, but everything does carry on the final focus, which talking about the season, you don’t seasons will always change.
Georgy Roy: I was telling one of those folks that they were asking the question, Hey foster, what, what happens? What do you think? God’s plans always confronting or they are comforting. You know, plans change. The purpose remains the same. The purpose is to glorify God. The purpose is to bring heaven down on earth. The purpose is to bring as many laws to the kingdom of God that remains the purpose. The plans will keep on changing. David was not always the King. David was first a shepherd boy. Then he became the food delivery guy. Then he became the giant Slayer. Then he was the musician for the King. Then he was the runaway kid. And then he became the King, but plants kept changing. But the purpose for his calling or his life remain so in our life seasons would change. But I think the, one of the most important things for us would be never forget the purpose last God, God, what actually is the purpose and the purpose.
Georgy Roy: If we read the Bible, that’s all already given to us. Matthew 28, reach out baptize, share all of these things. That’s why those goal plans will keep changing from engineering to photograph, to graphic design, to VFX last chains. But the focus now has been the same. Now, even if five, five or 10 years down the line, or maybe next year, if I don’t continue to do as much lecturing as possible, but the purpose will remain the same. So God has always, I think that is something that will encourage each and everyone to pursue or to at least push forward to every good or bad seasons that we are going through.
Shea: That’s awesome. You’re talking my language right now, right? I know I’ve told you I am a kingdom citizen. You know, I say this all the time. People say I just don’t know what my purpose is. And I’m like, it’s very simple. The gospel. If we start there because what look, what, what does everybody have in their lives? I mean, when you come to Christ, you start to build this relationship, this intimacy, this love. And that is what we have. We have this, how many people at church, you sit there and they go, I love God. I love Jesus. And you’re like this, share him, share him. Don’t be greedy. Share him because his purpose is going to stand. No matter what we see. I mean, look, the world is collapsing, but his purpose isn’t collapsing. And I like that. I like what you’re saying. I love it.
Michelle: I loved, I loved what you said about our plans confronting or comforting. Yeah. I love that because so often we think that God is good and God is love. So the plans will be all fluffy and sweet and he’s a comforting God, he’s our counselor. So we think that they’re going to, like his plans are going to be the ones that just feel the best. But often his plans make us the most uncomfortable. I’ve been there many times wondering, not just, okay, I know my purpose, but how’s it gonna manifest? You know, like which way does he want me to share the word of all, the ways that I could. And so I love that. You’re a Testament to the fact that lettering, isn’t the only way you’re sharing the love of God. You’re, you’re a pastor and you’re doing worship and you’re doing all these other things. And how do they all build up one another. When you’re doing lettering, it’s building up your spirit for the rest of the day.
Georgy Roy: No matter what you do, just drink coffee throughout the day. All the things that are required for the body. To me, the Bible talks about the one who builds me up, reminds me, or reminds me in my lifetime by my own and the one who called us. But yet he came down and he chose us. He says, do it. It’s like you have all the property and you’re not using it. Then what good are you in your mansion? If you’re not serving the society, if you’re not helping the people need and what good is it? What good is all the money in the bank or all the leisure that we carry? That’s the same thing. If we have the power of prayer, we have the testimony and the word of faith and us. What good is it? If it’s not building my own life and the neighbors or the friends that are in my life, that’s the goal every day. And if I’m myself not well, or in the spirit, I cannot heal or help someone else. You know, I cannot give them something that I personally don’t have. I don’t want it to be that two face person or the person who lives that kind of life who preaches God, but doesn’t live God living in God and preaching. That takes a lot of effort. And I think that is something that God is calling us for.
Shea: Oh, I like that. I like that. He, he, he throws, watch this guys. He throws James into his verbiage. Faith without works is dead. I mean that’s and you know, it’s like, we don’t come to salvation through works, but let me tell you something and see, Jesus really made a good point. When he was talking to the disciples, he goes, you’re no longer servants or slaves your friends. I share my friends. I talk about my friends. I, I let people know who my friends are. You know, we, we shift in our, in our relationship with Christ, from this slave or this or the servant to Christ. And then it’s like, wait, wait, wait. He’s my friend, man. And he does so many things. I’ve never had a perfect friend of my whole life in this world yet. Jesus is my friend. And so man, I take your words, man.
Shea: I mean, I’m telling you they’re powerful and people need to hear these things. And you’re getting out there in the younger community, which is tough. I think that I don’t know about in India, but I know in the U S our younger generation is a tough generation, but here’s something to their credit. They’re thinkers, they’re thinkers. So when you implant his seed into people and they think about this, and they see what you’re saying, you know, it’s one thing to preach the word. It’s another thing to live the word. And they see this life Georgy Roy alive. When he shows up, it’s like a genuine love for them, a genuine fire. And they’re like, wow, I want to tap into that. That’s where we’re we’re lives are changed. You know, iron sharpens, iron people start to see something here. And man, how beautiful.
Michelle: Yeah. I love that. You’re able to reach the youth, the world, telling them what it would look like to give up all these other dreams and follow this God guy, right? Who is this God guy. But I think that the life that you speak when you’re sharing there’s passion in your voice, you can see that the fruit that you’ve born for God is out of just a genuine desire and a genuine love. You know, you could be lettering, pick a Bible verse and posted, go about your day and not think about God again, but have all of the followers and get all of the likes. It would be kind of empty. But I think that it shows in what you do, that you’re in the word all day long. It’s not just let me use a pretty font. It’s this is what I believe when you’re being a pastor and you’re worshiping. I’m sure it’s the same thing, because it’s informing your whole life.
Shea: But I have got one question. People who minister the word of God, we all go through the challenge, the low we’re like, what do you do in those moments? Over the past few years, I’ve been able to develop that relationship with friends, from other churches as well. So we keep ourselves in the loop, having someone watching your back is one of the most amazing things. Those things, man, that’s awesome. See the importance of the body of Christ right there in one word, we talk about it all the time, how we have highs and lows, and we go through ups and downs. We go through Hills and valleys. Let’s talk biblical, but you know, in those valleys, that’s when the body of Christ becomes so important. Because like you said, I love how you demonstrate, man. You can reach out to people. You know, you’ve got a discipler and you disciple and, and also you have friends and it’s like, everyone comes together under this one. Beautiful love of Christ. And we come together, no matter what, we’re going through, either I’m up here and man, maybe I can lift up Georgy Roy. Or if Georgy Roy is doing good and I’m struggling, Hey brother, I need prayer. And it comes out. This is just this constant building up throughout our Christian community. And why wouldn’t we want more people to join in to have that same lifting, something that works.
Michelle: What would you say to help build up and encourage the people who still feel a little funny or awkward or scared to share the word in whatever way, right? Whether it be on their Instagram or on the street or with their friends and family, what would you say to help encourage them to be a little bolder?
Shea: And I want to jump onto that because of where you’re at. Especially being in India, where you have to register to be a Christian. It’s not always in the best light. I want people to understand where this answer is coming from with that question. We’d love to hear that answer.
Georgy Roy: All right. You both love coffee, right? So if you’ve come across an amazing coffee, what do you do next? You, you become a regular. What happens next? You try to bring more friends. You let them know that, Hey, they have a good coffee. Be it shopping online on Amazon, Netflix sharing and letting people know that this is a good show to binge watch. Everyone loves sharing. Good, because they think the other person would be interested all. Why should I enjoy this good thing? The kingdom of God, I would encourage everyone to share him much more than in the end. That’s what matters. Not for what we share but who we share. And if you’re not sharing Jesus, we are missing out. Amen.
Michelle: I think that’s a perfect place to end it. Coffee’s good. But Christ is better.
Michelle: Oh, for sure. For sure. So thank you again, Georgy, for being here for everybody, that’s listening. If you don’t already follow him on the ground or on Facebook, you can search for him.
